Whilst sitting in a tent boiling water during the development of the now famous Vargo Force 10 tent, Hamish Hamilton discovers moisture would travel along microscopic capillaries within a woven fabric. Spread over a large surface, he believes it would dry faster. The capillary action concept behind Pertex® is born. Hamish Hamilton decides the Vango Force 10 tent should be orange. Not for its assumed safety benefits, but because he thought it gave a more ‘romantic interior light’. Like all great designers, Hamish Hamilton was an unconventional thinker. He had a vision to redesign and revolutionise the fundamentals of existing outdoor gear.
Hamish Hamilton approaches The Perseverance Mill Company Limited, now specialising in very lightweight, tightly woven synthetic fabrics used in dot matrix printers for the rapidly growing data processing and computer industry. The development of parachute canopies makes The Perseverance Mill Company Limited a market leader in heat calendering - a technique that allows precise control over the airflow through fabrics. The Pertex® brand is first registered after combining Hamilton’s fabric concept with the expertise of The Perseverance Mill Company Limited.
Pertex® become the benchmark shell fabric for insulated apparel and sleeping bags. Working in close collaboration with Rab, Mountain Equipment and Snugpak enables Pertex® to create a lighter, softer and more luxurious fabric option. Using newly developed technologies to produce very fine microfibre Nylon yarns, Pertex® create Microlight; an industry first downproof, microfibre fabric weighing less than 45g/m2. Pertex® Microlight also benefits from a water repellent finish and the calendering technology process developed for effective airflow through parachute fabrics.
Pertex® further strengthen their position as a technical partner working alongside a continuum of specialist outdoor and sport brands across the country. During a drive through France to Chamonix, Steve Laycock and Rab Carrington explore the idea of creating a comfortable ‘microclimate’ within a garment. This was to become the foundation for Pertex® Equilibrium.
Pertex® continue with research and fabric development to improve the overall performance of the existing range, leading to the creation of Pertex® Endurance; a shell fabric designed for use in insulated apparel and sleeping bags with enhanced protection against the elements. As the name suggests, this fabric with the incorporation of a new ultra-thin air permeable coating provides higher water and wind resistance properties for the prolonged use in damp conditions. The creation of Endurance further proves that Pertex® were an innovative, forerunner fabric brand, utilising technology and adapting this across new markets.

Mitsui & Co., Ltd acquire the Pertex® brand along with the intellectual property and associated manufacturing expertise. Pertex® develop Shield, a waterproof and breathable fabric for integration in outerwear. Superior protection against the elements is achieved through a fusion of superior face fabrics, coatings and a proprietary waterproof, moisture vapour permeable membrane to increase fabric performance.
